ICT is found in every aspect of an organisation, from accounts and administration to manufacturing, human resources and sales. It is a key component of any organisation, yet it is often implemented in a ‘piece-meal’ fashion. The end result never quite delivers the return on investment or the improvements expected. This workshop has been designed to highlight the importance of investing in appropriate technology, quantifying the return on investment and ensuring that ICT projects fit with the business strategy. A vital workshop for those considering upgrading their ICT infrastructure or buying for the first time.

Content will include:

ICT investment and potential growth

Looking at ICT options

Forecasting revenue or cost savings

Quantifying the benefits of ICT

Objectives:

Delegates who attend this workshop will be able to:

Identify appropriate ICT equipment for their organisation’s needs.

Understand options on how to calculate return on investment.

Align ICT to their business growth strategy.

Techniques and methods

This is a highly participative workshop which concentrates on the benefits of ICT and does not cover the technical aspects of specifying an IT network or equipment. It does however give a valuable insight into the business considerations before buying equipment.

Duration: ½ day

Tutor: Stewart Bell Edinburgh Napier University

Stewart is an experienced Business and Technology Adviser with over 12 years experience of delivering key measurable outputs for economic development agencies. Skilled in stimulating change at senior management level by quickly understanding business needs, challenging assumptions, assessing priorities and articulating business benefit. Draws on a wealth of experience in delivering business-led technology solutions across a wide range of business sectors and client groups.

Microsoft is the latest sponsor to put its weight behind this year’s DrupalCamp Scotland, further underlining its commitment to Open Source and Open Standards.

Drupal is an open source modular platform used to build everything from personal blogs to enterprise applications. A free, two-day event, DrupalCamp Scotland brings together members of the Scottish Drupal community and aims to introduce the platform to new users with a series of accessible tutorials.

This year’s programme also includes a dedicated Drupal for Business event, which will explore the business benefits of using Drupal and open source software for start-ups and business owners.

A spokesperson for Microsoft said: “Microsoft has learned a great deal about Open Source and Open Standards over the last decade. We actively encourage developers to write Open Source code on Windows and make it as easy as possible to integrate mixed source code, frameworks and platforms.”

“We are delighted to be supporting DrupalCampScotland. We have worked hard to make sure Drupal works brilliantly on Windows Azure in the cloud, on Windows Server and on PCs via our free download – WebMatrix.”

Online registration is now open and there is still time for Drupal enthusiasts to submit session proposals. The deadline for submissions is 10 May and the full programme will be announced shortly after.

Increasing numbers of businesses, government agencies and non-profit organisation sites are turning to Drupal because it is free, flexible, and is constantly being improved by the hundreds of thousands of dedicated developers that are part of the global Drupal Community.

DrupalCamp Scotland will take place in the Informatics Forum at the University of Edinburgh on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May 2012. To discuss sponsorship opportunities, please contact Duncan@digitalnomad.co.uk.

To register or submit a session proposal, please visit http://camp.drupalscotland.org. The organisers can also be contacted on Twitter via @drupalcampscot.

The British Consulate in San Francisco has asked me to make UK readers aware of an upcoming UKTI MultiPlatform App Developer Mission. This will take place from 18-22 June in San Francisco.

Mission Activities will include:

A pre-departure meeting to discuss each company’s international expansion plans

Four days of meetings and master classes with strategist and evangelists from:

Major platform companies such as Microsoft, Kindle

Multi-platform tools such as PayPal, RhoMobile

B2B strategies such as Mashery, Salesforce

B2C strategies such as Twilio, Kiip

Demonstration stand at networking event to showcase and demo their app(s) to Silicon Valley press and potential partners

The event will take place 18-22 June 2012 (the week between Apple WWDC and Google IO).

It can be really challenging and expensive for UK companies to attend all of the Dev-Rel Conferences in the US. So UKTI will help delegate companies learn from the strategists and evangelists at the leading companies who are rapidly re-inventing this industry.

The mission would ideally suit DEVELOPERS from B2B and B2C Companies: SMEs & also Mobile App teams in larger companies. During the application process candidates will need to describe their business and their mobile app and show performance of their mobile apps. This mission is for developers with experience building and launching at least one mobile app – ideally a suite of apps. This mission will help these developers move to the next level and quickly launch their apps on multiple platforms.

Online registration is here: http://uktimadmission2012.eventbrite.com

Registration will close on 11 May and all delegates will be notified by 23 May.

(Note about registration: interested companies will have to register for the event in one sitting – they will have 90 minutes to complete the application.) Participation in the event costs £888.

Only 30 spaces are available – and the Consul expects the mission to sell-out. So hurry.
